The Remarkable Wood Carvings of Swansea

In the heart of the Swansea Valley, a remarkable display of wood sculptures has captured the attention of locals and visitors alike. Nestled along the picturesque canal path at Coed Gwilym Park in Clydach, these intricate carvings bring to life the beauty of nature, showcasing native animals such as owls, hares, otters, and even a couple of acorns. While the artist behind these masterpieces remains a mystery, his talent is truly extraordinary.

What makes these carvings even more awe-inspiring is the fact that the artist is entirely self-taught. Garry Turler, the genius behind these wooden wonders, explained his journey: “After spending most of my life working in a factory, I grew tired and decided to pursue my passion for wood carving. It started as a part-time hobby, but three and a half years ago, I took the leap and devoted myself to this art form full-time. It’s amazing how people have appreciated my work. I love seeing passersby stop, talk, and admire the carvings. It’s truly heartwarming.”

Garry, the founder of Wildboar Carvings, now operates his workshop at the top of the upper Swansea Valley in the breathtaking Brecon Beacons National Park. Specializing in chainsaw art, wood sculptures, and hand carvings, his creative expertise has earned him numerous projects throughout the region. One notable commission came from Swansea Council, which showcases his craftsmanship.

In 2019, Garry gifted the village of Cwmtwrch with an extraordinary wooden sculpture. Perched atop a beautifully carved ‘Cwmtwrch’ sign, the sculpture featured a majestic wooden boar—an emblem of the village’s name, meaning ‘valley of the wild boar’. It was a labor of love, a symbol of appreciation from Garry and his family to their beloved hometown.

Tragically, the boar sculpture was vandalized and stolen. Despite an appeal for information and a tempting reward, it has yet to be recovered. Garry shared his disappointment, saying, “It’s a shame, but I hope people will continue to appreciate the work I’m doing now. I’m working towards completing my newest creations within the week, weather permitting.”

As we anticipate the unveiling of Garry’s next carvings, let us cherish the beauty that nature and craftsmanship bring together in these incredible wooden sculptures. They are a testament to the extraordinary talent and dedication of an artist who has transformed the Swansea Valley into an enchanting gallery for all to enjoy.
