Born in the year 1874, Mary Ann spent her formative years in East London, surrounded by her parents and seven siblings. Pursuing her passion for healthcare, she dedicated herself to the study of medicine and ultimately embarked on a career as a nurse. Love bloomed when she tied the knot with Thomas Bevan, with whom she found joy and contentment, cherishing the blessings of a harmonious union.

Following her marriage, Bevan encountered a series of distressing symptoms, including abnormal growth, facial deformities, and debilitating migraines. These signs pointed towards acromegaly, a condition triggered by an overabundance of growth hormones. Unfortunately, during that era, knowledge about this ailment was scarce.

Over five years, Bevan’s physical appearance underwent a drastic transformation. Yet, despite these challenges, her loving husband stood by her side, offering unwavering support. Tragically, his life was cut short by a sudden stroke in 1914, leaving Bevan and their four children to face the world alone.

With the progression of her illness, Bevan’s vision began to falter, exacerbating the challenges she faced. Her deteriorating physical appearance not only cost her employment but made it exceedingly difficult to secure suitable work, plunging her into a profound struggle to earn a livelihood.

In a moment of desperation, Bevan made a difficult decision. She resolved to participate in an unconventional event known as the “Ugliest Woman” contest, hoping to capitalize on her changed appearance. Triumphing over 250 competitors, she emerged as the victor, claiming both the coveted title and the accompanying monetary reward.

In the year 1920, Mary Ann Bevan found employment under the wing of the renowned showman of that era, Samuel W. Gumpertz. Her unique attributes led her to become a featured member of his sideshow. From that point until her passing in 1933, Bevan dedicated herself to performing in various circuses, including the Dreamland Circus. Her primary motivation was to provide sustenance for her children and finance their education.

Curious onlookers flocked to witness her remarkable appearance, particularly captivated by her size 11 feet and size 25 hands. While Bevan’s tale is undeniably tragic, it serves as a poignant testament to the extraordinary lengths a mother will go to for the sake of her children. Though she may have been labeled as “ugly” in the past, history remembers her as one of the most loving and beautiful mothers ever graced our collective consciousness.

There is no doubt that there are so many strong women and mothers out there who do everything they can to teach their kids the right things. Women who aren’t afraid to stand up for themselves and change society’s norms. No matter what age they are.
